The Extraordinary Power of Ordinary People: Activists' Wins Against Local Despot

For years Sheriff Arpaio's approval ratings have been among the highest of any elected official in the state.  Conventional wisdom said no one could touch him and few dared.  Yet today his approval rating stands at 39 percent, more than 40 points below his peak.  The Feds have revoked his 287(g) authority that allowed his deputies to act as immigration agents.  The Dept. of Justice is investigating him for abuse of power and intimidation of elected officials.  He is being evicted from his luxury offices in the Wells Fargo Tower. Hear from the ordinary people who are standing up to Arpaio and chipping away at his stronghold!

Keeping the People, not Fat Cats in the driver's seat: The Future of Clean Elections in Arizona
Thursday, November 19th

Eleven years ago Arizona voters wisely passed the Citizens Clean Elections Act. Since then the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and its friends have tried to kill it.  They don't like voters interfering with their back-room choices of who may run for elective office, and they plan to place a repeal of Clean Elections on the 2010 ballot. At the same time, the health care debate has brought into sharp focus the overwhelming influence of big-money on public policy.  We must strengthen and expand public campaign financing, not eliminate it. Come hear from leading stakeholders and advocates about how you can help in this critical fight!
