The immigration debate has been taken over by hate groups whose views are amplified by hate radio and television programs.Arizona's
nativists are not only legitimized by the national media, they are
buoyed by Arizona's talk radio stations that are replete with
home-grown hate programs. They have champions in the Arizona
legislature that propose and pass laws against undocumented immigrants
that parallel those enacted against Jewish citizens in 1930s Germany. The
nativists do not distinguish between citizen and non-citizen Latinos. People of conscience can no longer be bystanders.
Comprehensive Immigration Reform
Our immigration system is broken, unfair and needs urgent reform. It is hurting our economy, families, and all American workers. Comprehensive immigration reform is
the solution. The current message in the media does not reflect our national values or support the public policies our communities are crying out for. By enlisting the broader progressive and moderate communities in speaking up for Comprehensive Immigration Reform and against the unjust policies and practices of Arizona's demagogues like Senator Russell Pearce, Sheriff Joe Arpaio and County Attorney Andrew Thomas we can begin to tell a new story about immigration in this country.
Please join us as we continue to work with Reform Immigration for America (RIFA), National Immigration Forum, America's Voice, the National Day Laborers Organizing Network and others to change the discourse.
A dark cloud of fear
has descended on Arizona. The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office has 160 trained deputies to act as immigration agents. They have been hunting for undocumented immigrants while more than 40,000 felon warrants remain unserved. As a result, immigrant parents are no
longer walking their children to school, families are afraid to attend
church, and businesses that support immigrant communities are closing.
It is time for the Department of Homeland Security, Secretary Napolitano and the Obama Administration to stop expanding the flawed 287(g) agreements and reign in Sheriff Joe. Community advocates have come together to condemn the 287(g) agreements and its failed expansion. AzAN along with over 500 organization have asked President Obama to terminate the 287(g) agreements. Read our letter to President Obama. Now it is your turn. Sign the petition to end 287(g) agreements.
Read a comparison of new 287(g) MOA and the Maricopa County MOA by the ACLU.
During Arpaio's racial profiling sweep the weekend of September 5 and 6, another of his deputies
grabbed the camera of activist and radio host Carlos Galindo and erased his
footage. Fortunately, Galindo had the techie know-how to be able to recover the
footage. Sheriff Joe knows that the documentation of his actions by our
volunteer activists has been getting him into to trouble. He is determined to
keep on engaging in unconstitutional actions without being inconvenienced by the
First Amendment, or any other constitutionally guaranteed rights.
Please contact your members of congress, Secretary Napolitano, the Department of Justice and President Obama. Tell them:
We need their help to stop Arpaio's efforts to make Maricopa County a "Constitution Free Zone."
He cannot continue to go unchecked.
Revoke his 287(g) authority
Calling Out The John Tanton Network
Hate and intolerance are being spread by our newspapers and televisions. One man, John Tanton, has created an network of organizations based on anti-immigration movement. These organizations have become part of the mainstream dialogue on immigration and are cited frequently by the media. The reality is that Federation for American
Immigration Reform (FAIR), the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS),
NumbersUSA, and the Social Contract Press have ties to White supremacy as discovered by the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League.
